Dear John:

I am writing to report a misleading error in the "Peport of State a nd Local Padiological Health Programs - Fi scal Yea r 1977" [ HEW Publication (FDA) 78-8034]. On page 27, relative to Nuclea r Regulatory Commi ssion/ State Agreement activities, it is stated: "In Fi scal Yea r 1976, the Sta tes reported perfoning 3,727 inspections (of licensees] compared with the 1,817 perfomed thi s fi scal yea r. Thi s represents a 51.3 percent decrease in the number of inspections perfomed by the Agreenent States." The figure 1,817 inspections, represents the number of inscections of licensees for one-half of Fi scal Yea r 1977. Ta b l e 20, p. 31, whi c h contains the figure 1,817, correctly reports that thi s and the other data contained therein is for July 1977 to Decenber 1977. Un fo rt una tel y, the text ha s used thi s data a s representing the entire Fi scal Year's e f fo rt. For the second hal f of Fi scal Yea r 1977, Janua ry 1078 through June 1978, the Agreement States perfomed an additional 1,962 inspections. There-fare, for Fi scal Yea r 1977, the Agreement Sta tes perfomed 3,779 inspec-tions of licensees. For Fi scal Yea r 1976, the Agreement Sta tes perfomed 3,563 i nspections, not 3,727 as reported in thi s and the previous yea r's renort. Therefo re, in Fi scal Year 1977, the Agreement States license inspec'. ion effort i ncrea sed by 3779-356J x 100 or 6.1", over the previous fi scal yea r. 3563 'I 9 0 316 0 23 1 l
