Modification No. 8 J. ' '.~.

Supplemental Agreement Contract No. NRC-04,

THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON CONTRACTOR:

APPENDIX A For the Contract period December 1,1978 through September 30, 1979 Article A-I RESEARCH TO BE PERFORMED BY CONTRACTOR (a) The unclassified scope of work, entitled " Evaluation and Development of Ecological Models for Assessing Environmental Impact Due to Nuclear Plant Operation;" Task 4 under this contract, includes the following:

Fish model comparison and evaluation including development of a 1.

general similator (AEGIS-Aquatic Ecosystem General Impact Simulator) for quantitative model comparison under identical natural and impact condi tions,

Investigate the usefulness of these models in indicating what a.

monitoring data are required and whether a relatively cheap element can be sampled which can indicate high potential for impact as was done for plankton models (Swartzman,1978).

b.

Investigate community structure changes under simulated impact especially to see if impact thresholds can be identified and if impact effects, on community structure identi fied in project 2 below can be linked to mechanistic causes.

Conduct ' worst case' impact simulations to see whether projected c.

worst _ cases will result in significant impact.

2.

Impact models -- proceed along lines recommended in Swartzman, Deriso and Cowan,1978, and investigate the usefulness of fish catch and effort data in impact assessment using an analytically tractable age structured model (Deriso,1978) using Roanoke River Striped Bass.

3.

Hold a model evaluation session with the NRC RRG, and at least two peer reviewers in the field, and a model communication workshop for NRC user group personnel.

4.

Proper documentation of computer codes developed by the investigator should be completed.

5.

The model simulator should be calibrated to Lake Keowee.

6.

Submit for publication a process by process model comparison notebook that includes a translation between standard notation and the notation contained in the models eviewed to date.
