UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION g,,g l g wAsmNo ron, o. c. 2czs s '> S i ' l
' I April 26, 1979 f
OFFICE OF THE CH AIRMAN Mr. James P. Swed Executive Director Radio Information Center for the Blind 919 Walnut Street Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19107
Dear Mr. Swed:
I have your letter of April 18th concerning my unfortunate reference to blind people and am both chagrined at my comment and appreciative of your understanding of the circumstances under which I uttered the words.
As you know, it was spoken during a period of intense frustration when we were unable to acquire sufficient information to make reasonable decisions on the situation at the Three Mile Island Nuclear Plant. The circumstances existing at that time have been amply reported in the press, but let me add that even the press accounts fell short cf expressing my personal exasperation at the events that had occurred. Needless to say, that is still no defense for using the old cliche about being blind.
I note it only to reiterate the situation as it was, and leave it to you to try to understand and forgive a slip of the tongue.
I hope you will forward my comments and apologies to those who I might have offended.
It has been an object lesson in the art of thinking before speaking, and I want to assure you again that the quoted state-ment intended no disparagement of anyone with a sight impairment.
s Sincerely, O %CwC 9
Jdseph M. Hendrie Chairman 790530069 *
