This refers to the telephone conversation between you and Mr. A.
B. Davis of this office on April 6, 1979, regarding the receipt, by import, of americium-241 in the SD-48 smoke detectors and use of this material through assembly and testing of the DFE III integral unit.
Your organization does not have Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) specific byproduct material license for these activities.
With regard to the matter discussed, we understand that you have undertaken or will take the following action by close of business, April 10, 1979.
1.
Discontinue further import or receipt of the SD-48 smoke detector components containing americium-241, and place no further orders to purchase more of these components until you have obtained a valid specific NRC license.
2.
Discontinue the assembly of the SD-48 smoke detector components into the completed DFE III integral unit, and perform no further testing of this product until you have obtained a valid specific NRC license.
3.
Secure all SD-48 smoke detector components in your possession under lock and key (or return them to Nittan Corporation) and maintain these components in this status until you have obtained a valid and specific NRC license.
