October 31, 1984 BJSnyder PJGrant RJCook JMBell DJCollins Mr. and Mrs. Norman Aauodt RD #5, Box 428 Coatesville, PA 19320
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Aamodt:
This letter is to confirm earlier information provided to you ve-bally regarding the results of environmental sample analyses. Specifically, radio-isotopic analyses of several soil / water saaples have been conducted. Two samples were collected during the August 30, 1984 trip with you to three locations on the West shore of the Susquehanna river in the vicinity of the Three Mile Island site. These locations, per your request, are not further identified in this letter. One soil sample (Loca ion #1) was collected by representatives of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on Septemb2r 4, 1984.
The results of the analyses completed to date indicate that the samples contained plutoniuc, strontium, and cesium at levels associated with fallout from weapons testing, in addition to naturally occurring radioisotopes. These results are consistent with those that were obtained August 30, 1904 by representatives of the Nuclear Regulatory Coamission (NRC), the EPA and the Pennsylvania Departret of Environmental Resources (PA DER) using portable radiation monitoring instruments. The information presented in this letter has been reviewed and concurmd in by EPA and PA DER officials.
The enclosure provides preser.uf available results of the analyses Ltich have been performed by HRC, DOE, EPA's Middletown Field Office and by the PA DER's laboratory. Additional analysis of the samples at EPA's Montgomery, Alcbana, laboratory is scheduled to be completed within a few weeks. The results of these tests will be provided to you when they become available.
Sincerely, ORIGINAL SIGNED BY:

- pCi/g = picocuries per gram = billionths of a curie per gram.
- The pond and spring water samples were analyzed by PA DER and EPA. With the exception of naturally occurring radionuclides, no activity above the mini-mum detectable concentration was found. The minimum detectable concentra-tion is in the range of a few picocuries per milliliter (one milliliter of water is approximately I gram).
NOTE: Except at location 2, analyses for strontium and transuranics have not yet been completed.
Results of these analyses will be provided when they become available from the EPA.
