Request for Additional Information: Argonne National Laboratorys Quality Assurance Program for SFR Metallic Fuel Data Qualification Date: Thursday, September 26, 2019 9:11:02 AM Attachments: ANL QAPP Request for Additional Information.pdf

Dear Dr. Hill:

By letter dated May 30, 2019 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML19156A404), Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) submitted a Quality Assurance Program Plan (QAPP) for Sodium Fast Reactor (SFR) Metallic Fuel Data Qualification to the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for review.

As part of its review, the NRC staff has identified additional information needed to continue its review of the QAPP, as described in the attached request for additional information (RAI). A draft of this RAI was discussed with ANL representatives on a conference call held September 16, 2019 (ADAMS Accession No. ML19260G162). The NRC staff requests that ANL provide a response to the RAI or a written request for additional time to respond, including the proposed response date and a brief explanation of the reason, within 30 days of the date of this request. Following receipt of the complete response to the RAI, the NRC staff will continue its review of the QAPP for the SFR Metallic Fuel Data Qualification.

Based on the response timeframe provided above, the NRC staff expects to complete its review and make a final determination on the QAPP for SFR Metallic Fuel Data Qualification by December 2019. This date could change due to several factors, including a need for further RAIs, unanticipated changes to the scope of the review, or unsolicited supplements to the application. If the forecasted review completion date changes, the NRC staff will notify ANL in writing of the new date and an explanation of the reason for the change. In the case that the NRC staff requires additional information beyond that provided in the response to this RAI, the NRC staff will request that information by separate correspondence.

If you have any questions regarding the NRC staffs review or if ANL intends to request additional time to respond, please do not hesitate to contact Lucieann Vechioli either by phone at 301-415-6035 or by electronic mail at Lucieann.Vechioli@nrc.gov.

Sincerely, Steve Lynch, Acting Chief Advanced Reactor Licensing Branch Office of New Reactors, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Office: O-4H7 MS: O-12D20 Phone: 301-415-1524
