METRO ULITAN EDISON COMPANY (THREE' MILE ISLAND 1), 289/69-A DEFECTIVE STAINLESS PIPE Approximately 200 feet of 2-1/2" pipe and 140 feet of 3" stain-less steel pipe ordered for the rad-waste system have been refected for use in unit 1.
Mill certificates indicate the pipe is A-304 stainless steel pipe fabricated according to ASTM A-312.
Microetche. photographs show what appears to be filler metal on one sample and incomplete fusion on another sample.
Samples of this '. pipe have been sent to three independent test laboratories for evaluation.
Met Ed has promised to provide 9
compliance a report of their findings a*ter the laboratory reports are received.
Currently this pipe has been rejected by Met Ed for allcuse
(
except temporary drain pipe.
Stainless steel pipe fabricated according to ASTM A-376 has been ordered for use in place of all ASTM A-312 pipe.
Specificati'ons are being revioed to reflect this change.
4 The rejected pipe was bought from Allegheny.Ludlum and Union Steel.
Region I will follow up on Met Ed's findings.
