Dear Mr. Ritchie:
I am responding to your letter of September 4,1979, in which you requested information related to the current status of mill tailings regulation pursuant to provisions of the Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act of 1978.
I have enclosed copies of two Federal Register Notices on this subject.
The August 10, 1979, notice, entitled Implementation of the Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act of 1978 (UMTRCA) explains how the Commission is implementing provisions of UMTRCA in both Agreement and non-Agreement states. The August 24, 1979 notice, entitled Licensing Requirements for Uranium Mills, contains proposed regulation changes incorporating conclusions of the Generic Environmental Impact Statement as well as immediately effective regulation changes which incorporate provisic,ns of UMTRCA.
