General Offices. 212 West Michigan Avenue, Jackson, Machigan 49201 o Area Code 517788-0550 August 23, 1979 Director, Nuclear Reactor Regulation Att Mr Dennis L Ziemann, Chief Operating Reactors Branch No 2 US Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555 DOCKET 50-155 - LICENSE DPR BIG ROCK POINT PLANT - DEGRADED GRID VOLTAGE:

RESPONSE

TO REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION NRC letter dated July 9, 1979 requested Consumers Power Company to provide information related to our proposed second level of undervoltage protection at Big Rock Point. This proposed protection was discussed in Consumers-Power Company's letter dated June 14, 1978.

The requested additional information included a detailed voltage analysis for each bus in the on-site distribution system.

Certain modifications made to the station power system during the current outage necessitate slight modifications to the computer model used to perform voltage analyses.

The contractor performing this work is unable to accomplish these modifications due to extensive commitment of resources.

Many of the tasks currently being accomplished by this contractor are related to Inspec-tion and Enforcement Bulletins issued in recent months for our Big Rock Point and Palisades Plants. These Bulletins require rapid responses and our requests to postpone certain of these efforts have been disapproved.

Accordingly, we are unable to provide the subject additional information at this time.

Consumers Power Company's letter dated September 1, 1978 committed to installation of the proposed second level of undervoltage protection during the 1980 refueling outage.

The extended length of the current outage has resulted in a delay in the schedule for the 1980 outage.

The 1980 outage is currently scheduled to begin in September 1980.

The additional information requested by the July 9, 1979 NRC letter will be provided by January 15, 1980.

In view of the delay in the 1980 refueling outage discussed above, this should provide adequate time for review to support the committed installation during the 1980 refueling outage.
