%.....,1 FEb s 1979 MEMORANDUM FOR:

F. Swanberg, Jr., Chief Environmental Effects Research Branch Division of Safeguards, Fuel Cycle and Environmental Research FROM:

Judith D. Foulke Environmental Effects Research Branch Division of Safeguards, Fuel Cycle and Environmental Research

SUBJECT:

RESEARCH REVIEW GROUP MEETING - ASSESSMENT OF SOURCES OF OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE AT LIGHT WATER REACTORS (82096)

On February 2,1979, Mr. Tom Hall and Ms. Alyssa Dodd of United Nuclear Industries, Inc. met with NRC staff to discuss the progress on the project, " Assessment of Sources of Occupational Exposure at Light Water Reactors. " Research review group members in attendance are listed in.

T. Merphy reiterated the objective of the project; namely, evaluating the effectiveness of Regulatory Guide 8.8, "Information Relevant to Ensuring That Occupational Radiation Exposures at Nuclear Power Stations Will Be As low As Is Reasonably Achievable."

T. Hall stated that the methodology for rating the features given in Regulatory Guide 8.8 has been developed, but that the data to implement the method do not exist.

T. Murphy noted that Science Applications, Incorporated, in a technical assistance project confirmed that data to document exposure savings have not been collected by the utilities.

T. Hall pointed out that application of the methodology to available data can point out where the problem areas are and their magnitude. The consensus of the NRC group was that, although the objective of the project cannot be achieved because of the absence of confinnatory data, the project has been successful and should proceed to completion.

J. Foulke has initiated a no-cost-extension through March 30, 1979.

T. Hall stated that approximately $40,000 is available to complete the work.

With regard to presentation of the results, J. Foulke noted that the final report should be published as a NUREG document. There was some discussion as to whether this should be done in one volume or whether the demonstration of the methodology at the eight operating utilities should be put into a separate volume. With regard to peer review of the methodology developed in this project, it was suggested that UNI present a paper at the American Nuclear Society meeting.
