20535 License No. DPR-35 Docket No. 50-293 Environmental Qualification of Class IE Eauioment Ref: (1)Bulletin 79-01, Dated 2/8/79
Dear Sir:
Reference (1) establishes reporting requirements for action taken by Boston Edison to respond to Bulletin 79-01.
Loston Edison feels the item reported below does not fall under the mandatory reporting requirements of the Bulletin.
However, the action taken was relevant to the subject Bulletin. Boston Edison's reporting of this action will assist in the NRC's subsequent reviews of Boston Edison's actions on this Bulletin.
During a recent unscheduled outage at Pilgrim Nuclear Power antien, Unit #1, an inspection indicated that the field cable to ADS solenoid valve splice connections were assembled using hand twist wire joints.
Although our engin-cering evaluations, based on screen tests conducted by other utilities, in-dicated that this type of termination could perform its required function under LOCA environments, we have replaced them with RAYCHEM heat shrink type splices.
These RAYCHEM splices have successfully passed numerous LOCA qualification te:ts including one conducted by tJYLE LABS for Boston Edison.
The decision to replace these splices for the field cable to the ADS Solenoids by Boston Edison was based on economic factors.
The economic factors indicated that it was cost effective to replace the existing splices with splices for which envirnomental qualification data exists in hand rather then pursue a search for the environmental qualifit.ation document for and/or perform tests on the existing splices.
