Dear Mr. Secretary:

Enclosed is a cooy of a letter which I received from Representative John E. Anderson writing on behalf of the Illinois Atomic Energy Commission concerning possible Federal funding for the Illinois State Police Hazardous Materials Transportation Progr:m.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is already assisting the State with a program for monitoring the transport of radioactive materials within Illinois.

However, it lacks the means and authority to support State programs involving other hazardous materials.

It is my understanding that the Department of Transportation may have funds available for this purpose.

If so, I am sure the Congressman and the State of Illinois would appreciate any assistance your Department may be able to provide in this respect.

I have advised Congressman Anderson that I am forwarding his request to you and am enciosing a copy of my response for your information.

Sincerely, e
