ZIMMER NUCLEAR POWER STATION UNIT 1 - NRC MATERIALS LICENSE NO. SNM-1823 Gentlemen:
e The Cincinne?' Gas & Electric Company, for itself and as agent for ColunLus and Southern Ohio Electric Company and The Dayton Power and Light Company, requests that NRC Materials License No. SNM-1823 be amended as follows:
1.
Revise Item 4, Expiration date, to read, "upon conversion of Construction Permit No.
CPPR-88 to an operating license."
2.
Add an authorization to receive, possess and use one (1) Pu-Be neutran source.
The Model 2724 Pu8Be neutron source is doubly encapsulated in stainless steel (see Monsanto Research Corporation drawing A-2724-BA00).
The neutron output is 1.lE + 7 n/sec (+ 10%) with a nominal 5 curies of Pu-2387 The source will be shipped to ZPS-1 in a U.S.D.O.T.
specification 7A (type A) container which utilizes water extended polyester neutron shielding.
It will be kept in its original shipping container (when not in use) and will be stored in the Instrument Control Room at the 473' level of the Turbine Building (see ZPS-1 FSAR Figure 1.2-6).

The source will be used as a calibration check device for portable neutron survey instruments.
Mr.
D. L.
Erickson is responsible for rat 'ation safety at ZPS-1.
Mr. Erickson's resume and a description of the ZPS-1 rad-chem staff are given in FSAR Attachment 13.A-8 and Section j
13.1.2.2.3, respectively.
Personnel monitoring for neutron dose will be in accordance with i
criteria and methods recommended ineRevision 1 of USNRC Regulatory Guide 8.14.
As time constraints are involved for the procurement of the neutron source,a reply to this request by March 2,
- 1979, would be appreciated.
