October 5,1984 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF SAFEGUARDS EVENT--PNS-I-84-20 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE national security or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region I staff on this date.

Subject:

IMPROPRIETIES DURING SECURITY QUALIFICATION EXAM: NATION On October 3,1984, a supervisory em'ployee of the licensee's contract security service was permitted to resign due to improprieties engaged in while taking portion of a security cualification examination. An investigation conducted by the contract security service concluded, with a high probability, that the incident was an isolated case.

The licensee directed and confirmed that appropriate corrective actions were ins'tituted by the security service. Region I preliminarily concurs with the corrective actions which were taken.

Region I was notified of this event at 2:40 p.m. on October 3,1984 by the Site Secu 3y Supervisor. Circumstances surrounding the incident were confirmed 3:00 p.m., October 4, 1984. The State of New York has been informed.
