E WASHINGTON, D. C. 20555 8
MAY 5 1980
(...* f The Honorable James Martin United States House of Representatives Washington, D.C. 20515
Dear Congressman Martin:
Thank you for your letter of April 16, 1980 enclosing correspondence from your constituent, Angelina S. Howard, concerning the cleanup of Three Mile' Island Unit 2.
Ms. Howard urges that cleanup activities be conducted as rapidly as possible and urges prompt venting of radioactive krypton-85 from the containment building.
On March 12, 1980 the NRC staff recommended that venting of the krypton gas into the environment be permitted.
It provided an environmental assessment in support of its position.
The Comission requested public comment on the staff's environmental assessment and is now actively reviewing its recomendation.
The Commission expects to be able to make a decision on the proposed venting in the near future.
I hope that this information is helpful in responding to your constituent.
Sincerely, Y-g4 Carlton tor Office of Congressional Affairs 8006120 M q
