Kevin Pence Address:
P. O. Box 252 Arroyo Grande, CA, 93421 Email: Oofu@aol.comi General Comment I am a lifelong resident of Arroyo Grande, California. I grew up with the children of the people that built Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant. Several of the engineers that ran the plant are parrishoners in my church.
I work along side many of the workers that have done the outage maintenance on the plant the last 25 years. I do not fear this plant operating longer. Many other jurisdictions have realized that their nuclear plants are the greenest option for their electrical power needs. As long as California is on a course that requires we go carbon neutral, I see few options better than keeping nuclear power on line to power up an ever increasing number of electric vehicles that will need to be recharged at night. Unfortunately many of my fellow Californians did not pay attention in school as to where the rare earth minerals that are required to make the batteries to run these vehicles come from and the evironmental cost of refiningj these elements, and the dangers to first responders who have to deal with these elements in the case of a collision. Nuclear waste storage or reprocessing is a challenge we have not spent enough time and thought on in the last decade. One thing many people fail to grasp is the volume of waste a power plant like Diablo Canyon produces. Uranium is a very heavy element. A ton of uranium takes up a much smaller space to store than most other waste materials we deal with. I recognize that nuclear waste is dangerous for a very, very long time. The United States has a very good record of keeping this material under control compared to most other nuclear nations.
As a university educated tradesman, I am a practical solutions oriented person. Pie in the sky solutions lead directly to call backs. Never a sound business or governmental basis for making a decision.
