Representatives attending this meting are noted on the enclosed list. The meetino with quarry officials was requested by the staff of ?:RC to assist '.RC consultant, the U. S. Geological Survey, in evaluating the effects of blastinq at the Sanatoga quarry on the construction and future operation of the Limerick Generating Station. The approximately 65 feet to 80 feet high existing quarry face is about 3G00 feet from the reactor buildings of the Lincrick facility.

Discussions on Decenber 18, 1979 with quarry officials and their blasting and seismological consultants revealed the following information:

Blast infornation 1.

A typical blast would have the following characteristics:

a.

Up to 13 holes; 6 inches in dia.eter; 12 feet snacing; 20 feet throu; 14 to 13 feet ste ninq b.

Explosives consist of CC0 pounds of stick slurry (Amonium iittrate with fuel oil) and several one pour riynamite boosters perhhole.

l. Geology - The guarry site is situated in Brunswick Shale whose dip is 5 to 15 to the NW.

Consequently, the blast locations are stratigraphically higher than Limerick plant site. The specific horizons in which the blastinq occurs when projected toward the Lioerick plant would be nany feet above the present surface and consequently have been eroded away.

2. Each blast conducted by Pottstown Trap-Rock Quarries, Inc. is monitored by their seismological consultant. Monitoring records available at the meeting on past shots indicated peak particle velocities well within the limits of the State and Federal regulations.
3. Future quarry expansion would appear to allow the top edge of quarry face to advance to within 50 feet of the property line adjoining the Limerick j

plant area. This is an approximately 450 feet advance from the existing quarry location.

An opinion was expressed that it is likely a creater threatffrom a blast on the Linerick plant would come fren the nearby Pottstown Firestone plant, where large chemicals are thought to be required, than from operations at the Sanatoga quarry.

Aerial colored photograpos, 11" x 14" in size, were kindly provided by quarry officials for URC use. These photos give a clear view of the quarry's location in relation to the construction at the ainerick plant.

The above meeting minutes have been coordinated with D. Tibbitts and J. Devine, USGS.
