April 13,1975 ...

Dear Senator:

This is a follow up of our conversation of April 11, 1975, in regard to the Nuclear Power Station at Three Mlle Island. On April 5, 1975 i noticed that the Three Mile Island Nuclear Plant had ceased operating. I waited three days expecting some explanation in our local paper as to the nature of the shut down. When no word was forthecming, I phoned the York Dai ly Record. It is now April 9. The newspaper informed me a news confer-ence had been called within the hour. i'The Power Company related two reasons for a four day shut down. 1. A two hour radiation emergency drill involving 75 Met. Edison Company employees and more than 50 construction workers. This drill is required once a year as a condition for licensing. 2. The four day shut down was due to a maintenance problem that

                       ]involvedreplacementofanauxiliarymotor.

Mr. Walter _ S. Poych, Coordinator of Services said, "The likelihood of such a nuclear accident is highly remote but the technical possib]Ilty that exists requires periodic drills in the interest of readiness and preparation." What are the technical possibilities that exist? What preparation? If these nuclear power stations are as safe as tha power companies would have us believe, and they certainly are constantly reassuring us that there is no danger, then why all the precautions? When the Power Ccepany begins to speak in terms of evacua-tion by nearby residents in the event of a nuclear accident as they did in this recent news conference, that's when it's time to start evacuating all nuclear plants out of the Ccmmonwealth of Pennsylvania. Furthermore, it insults the intelligence of every citizen to expect us to swallow such a conflicting story. i The Power Ccmpany informed the press that they would begin operaticns on Wednes-

, day, Apri l 9. True to their word the towers began emanating steam Thursday i morning. However, by noon it began to dissipate and by midafterncon there .vas
; no discernible evidence that it was operating at all. It is new April 13 and there is still no sign that they have resumed cperations. What could possibily require the Pcwer Company to close down their plant for this length of time un-less it was of a sericus nature.

It becomes increasingly clear that the Power Ocmpany has been'less than candid

. In its reports regarding the operation of these nuclear plants. There is tco much at stake for our Representatives to ignore the pcssibility of a cover up.
