IE Bulletin No. 79-19 The following information is submitted pursuant to item 9 of IE Bulletin No. 79-19, Packaging of Low-Level Radioactive Waste for Transport and Burial.
1.
An ad hoc committee was established by the Chairman of the LeRC Radiation Safety Committee. The function of the ad hoc committee is to serve the audit function as detailed in item 8 of the bul-letin. You will find enclosed a copy of the memorandum estab-lishing the comittee.
2.
One low-level radioactive waste shipment was made during the period January 1978 through June 1979. The volume of waste shipped was 229.4 cubic feet.
3.
A total of 32.9 curies of low-level radioactive waste was shipped during that period. The major isotopes were: Thorium-232, Zinc-65, Krypton-85, Carbon 14, Strontium-90, and Tritium.
4.
Liquid low-level radioactive waste was generated and the solid-ification medium was cement powder.

SUBJECT:
Management Audit of Transfering, Packaging and Transporting Low-Level Radioactive Waste The enclosed IE Bulletin No.79-19 issued by the U.S. Nuclear Regula-tory Commission (NRC) describes some violations of regulations for proper packaging of radioactive wastes. As a result of these viola-tions, certain actions are now required by all NRC licensees.
One of these actions is the establishment and implementation of a management-controlled audit fu1ction as defined in items No. 7 and 8 of the Bulletin. A record of the audit is to be maintained for in-spection by NRC or Department of Transportation (00T) inspectors.
In compliance with the Bulletin, the following committee is established to serve the audit function:
Head, Radiation Applications Office Dr. J. W. Blue Mr. C. E. Lowell - Head, Corrosion Section Mr. D. J. Bily
- Head, Materials Management Section Dr. Blue will serve as Chairman of the Committee. The results of the audit shall be in writing and submitted to the Radiation Safety Com-ittee October 1,1979.
