Dear Ms. Corson:

We appreciate your concern about restarting the operation of Unic No. 1 of the Three Mile Island Nuclear Station.

On July 2,1979, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued the following order:

"In view of the variet of issues raised by the accident at the 2 facility, the Commission presently Three Mile Island Unit.'40 lacks the requisite reaseable assurance that t.he same licensee's Three Mile Island Unit No. i facility, a nuclear power reactor of similar design, can be oper ated without endangering the health and safety of the public.

Ac.;ordingly, we direct that the Unit No. I facility, presently ir, a shutdown condition, shall remain The shut down until further order af the Commission itself.

Commission has further determined that it is in the public interest that a hearing precede res...irt of t, facility.

The Commission will also issue an order within tl.

'30) days specifying in detail the basis for its concerns, and the procedures to govern further proceedings in this matter.

The licensee may file a written answer to this Order no later than twenty (20) days after the issuance of the detailed Order.

The Commission has found that the public health, safety and interest require that this order be effective inmediately.

It is so ORDERED."

You can therefore be assured that Three Mile Isl and Unit No. I will remain shut down until the Commission has determined, t.fter a public hearing, that it can be operated without endangering the pub'ic health and safety.
