May 15, 1980 Article A-I RESEARCH TO SE PERF0 MED BY CONTRACTOR (a)

The unclassified scope of work under this contract, enti+'ed " Study of the Pattern and Ages of Post-itetamorphic Faults in the Northern Piedmont of Virginia and North C rolina" is as follows:

5 COPE OF PROPOSED THREE-YEAR TECHNICAL PROGRAM 1.

Develop a three-dimensional geologic framework of part of the Central Virginia Seismic Zone in terms of:

a) faults b) surfaces of appreciable regidity contrast 2.

Complete a regional study of the tectonic framework of Triassic basins in Virginia and the relation of this framework to historical seismicity.

3.

Continue compilation and analysis of:

a) structures b) crustal heterogeneity in elastic properties for Virginia and adjacent areas in North Carolina.

Five objectives are proposed for the first year are as follows:

~

1.

Geologic napping in the Centra' Virginia Seismic Zone in the s;cinity of the Central Piedmont Lineament (Gocchland and Cartersville 7-1/2' quadrangles).

2.

Origin of the eastern Piedmont (Powhatan) gravity high and its possible relation to current seismicity in the Central Virginia Seismic Zone.

3.

Geologic framework as related to seismicity at the eastern bour dary of i

the Central Virginia Seismic Zone.

4.

Tectonic framework of Triassic basins.i lirginia and North Carolina.

5.

Compilation of faults and linears on 20 AMS 1:250,000 scale topographic map base.
