S A short meeting was held with the DOE staff to estai.ish a plan for visiting a number of selected DOE facilities engaged in R&D of waste forns and packaging for both High-Level and Transuranic Wastes. The need fcr those trips arises from our need to be familiar with the present status of the DOE program in these areas in light of the recent requst by the U.S. Maclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) that the DOE place increased emphasis of the developnent of waste foms and packaging to contain tie radioactive wastes for very long periods of time (i.e.,a 1000 years).

During the meeting the NRC position on the multibarrhr/ defense-in-depth concept was discussed as well as the letter f,w Mr. John B". Martin, Director Division of Waste Management, NRC, to Mr. Sheldm Meyers, Director, Office of Nuclear Waste Management, 00E, requesting the 00E place increased empnacis on the develop::ent of improved waste foms and packages.

A letter *'from Mr. Martin to Mr. Meyers is now being c"4fted femally regiest-ing that trips be set up for the NRC staff to review the ongoing R&D worL within the DOE in the areas of site selection, repository oesign, and wa::te' fom and packaging developnent.
