l I THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO O ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO 87131 CHEMICAL & NUCLEAR ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT C TELEPliONE 505: 277-5ut March 14, 1979 Mr. Victor Stello Division of Operating Reactors U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washingt.on, D. C. 20553 Re: Facility License R-102 Docket Number 50-252

Dear Mr. Stello:

The purpose of this letter is to inform you that our AGN-20lM Reactor has been shut down for sometime pending replacement of in-strumentation in safety channel #2. The requisite instrument is on order, but may not arrive for several months.

At this time we are neither operating nor performing periodic maintenance activities. We will also be unable to conduct our sched-uled operator requalification.

Upon receipt of the instrumentation, a thorough qualification, and all needed maintenance will be perfomed before operations resume.

We will also conduct our requalification program at the earliest fea-sible time. Since it is most convenient for our (part-time) staff to have the written and operations portions of the program at roughly the same time, I would propose that the former also be deferred pending re-sumption of the reactor operations.

Please advise us of our status at your earliest convenience. Thank you.

Sincerely,

, fQ /. / c) i n-
