Dear Mr. Denton:

Pursuant to Section 50.55a(a)(2)(ii) of 10CFR Part 50, which requires that proposed alternatives to the requirements of Section 50.55a provide an acceptable level of quality and safety, and Footnote 6 to Section 50.55a, which states that the use of specific Code Cases may be authorized by the Commission for safety-related piping, it is requested that the following components be approved for use in the construction of Class II and III J piping which must conform to the requirementsSection III, Division 1 of the ASME Boiler Pre ssure Vessel Code. The components, identified as MBC part numbers 75650, 75648, 75743, 75649, and 75652, are flexible hoses consisting of a convoluted metal hose with a sheath of flexible wire braid over the convoluted hose. Requirements for the use of these flexible hoses in ASME Code application = ara addressed in Case Code N-192. Further con-ditions are applied b, Kegulaturf Guide 1.84, Revision 14. Appropriate data has been attached w'aich demunstrates ompliance of the flexible hose with those conditions specified in Code Case F-192 and Regulatory Guide 1.84, Revision 14.

It is requested that approval for use of this flexible hose be expedited in order to allow inclusion of the hose in the de ign of the component cooling system for Unit 2. A response by March 1, 1979 would be appreciated.

5.0 Stresses are within those listed under SA-479 as required. Refer to Report CR 531-Note 17 for required number of strands.

6.0 The examination requirements of the material specifications shall apply. In addition, visual examination of the wire strand-to-collar welds shall be required at initial acceptance to detect unconnected wire.

7.0 The fabricated flexible metal hose shall be stamped on one welding collar with the NPT Code symbol in accordance with NCA-8321. The Design Pressure and Temperature shall be part of the required information.

2 The braid provides tht axial restraint caused by the pressure end load, to minimize the need of rigid anchors.

3 Owner will comply; the porvious braid will allow water to leak, seep, or flow through if leak develops in hose.

4 Extra shipping bars are not required to maintain proper face-to-face length because the hose braid provides required restraint.

The owner must comply with alignment installation requirements.

Floating flange at each end will minimize twisting the hose.

5 Flow direction not required for a hose.

6 Not required. Flow velocities are below critical levels, See Stress Report CR 530 7 All pressure boundary material shall conform to NC 2000.

12 MBC is using the standa rd published equations of EJMA to demonstrate compliance v:ith this life requirement. MBC Stress Report, CR 530, provides the calculations to show life is met.

MBC has conducted many tests of its own and has found results to be very similar to EJMA results.

p CR 531 METAL [n[d/N CORPOR ATION g s REMARKS NOTE 14 All types of stress cycles were considered with pressure stress and motion stress occurring simulteneously to produce the significant stress for life calculations.

Cumulative stresses for scismic and therms 1 motion are provided for in the single motion supplied to MBC. Requirement is met.

NOTE 15 Cylindrical collars are used and are accounted for, since the collars provide an excellent location to attach the light wall bellows material to a heavier ring where the braid and tube stub are attached. Attachment of the hose (or bellows) joints meets the requirements of the ASME B & PV Code Section III Para. NC 4800.

16 The spring rate for a long hose is usually so low that it is difficult to measure without the braid because of squirm.

Calculated spring rates are provided in CR 530. Friction forces provide a larger portion of the loading than spring rate loads and are also considered, and a factor is applied to show that the imposed loads will be less than the allowable required by the customer.

No individual spring rate tests will be performed on production hose.

1. 0 INTRODUCTION This report, CR 530, was prepared by hietal Bellows Corporation, Chatsworth, California, for Duke Power Company, Charlotte, Nort'1 Carolina, in accordance with Duke Power Company Specification hiCS - 1206. 00-08-0002, dated 8-23-78.

This report provides the stress analysis for the three (3) different hoses used in the CCS systems for the hicGuire Nuclear Station.

The analysis is in accordance with the rules of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section III, Subsection NC/ND, Class 2&3 components.

Each hose is analyzed separately to verify the hose meets all requirements. The bellows analysis uses the Standard EJhiA Performance Equations and ignores the hoop support provided by the braid. The analysis of the braid is to show the stresses imposed by the pressure end load are within Code allowables.

The braid inward force vector far exceeds the squirm force created by the hose, and bellows squirm calculations are ignored.

Two (2) hoses are used together in an "L" configuration to absorb all motions. A simplifying, conservative assumption, is made that all vertical motion is absorbed by the horizontal hose and all horizontal motion is absorbed by the vertical hose. In actual practice the elbow allows the two hoses to interact, and the effective motions are slightly less.

The seitmic analysis consisted of analysis of natural frequencies.

Reports CR 427 and CR 439 are to show that these a.ssemblics have ,

passed the actual seismic requirements.
