Mr. John M. Bryson, II Steptoe & Johnson Attorneys at Law 1250 Connecticut Avenue IN RESP 0MSE REFER Washington, DC 20036 TO F01A-79-13

Dear Mr. Bryson:

This is in response to your letter dated January 16, 1979 in which you requested, pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act, copies of an unpublished 1965 study concerning the incidence of leukemia among Utah residents exposed to radioactive fallout from U.S. atomic bomb tests, and other studies concerning diseases resulting from U.S. atomic bomb testing and U.S.-initiated exposures to radiation.

Your letter was received by the Office of Administration on January 18, 1979.

In a telephone conversation with Mr. Don Grimsley of my staff on February 6,1979, you were informed that the NRC has no jurisdiction over the monitoring of radioactive fallout from U.S. atomic tests. However, the NRC does have the mission to protect the public health as it relates to commercial use of nuclear materials.

In performing its duties, NRC staff routinely collects numerous reports, journal articles, and other records which discuss the health aspects of exposures to radiation. In order for you to determine which, if any, of these records are of interest to you, you agreed with Mr. Grimsley to speak with a knowledgeable NRC official. You may call Mr. Frank Arsenault, Director, Division of Safeguards, Fuel Cycle, and Environmental Research at 301-427-4350, and discuss your needs with him.

If you have any further questions regarding this matter, please contact Ms. Ellen Whitlow, F0I/PA Branch, at 301-492-8133.
