October 31, 1978 Senator Willian Proxnire Senate Office Building Washington, D.C.
20510 Mar Senator Proxnire, I would like to neninate the Nuclear Retalatory Cc:.nission for cen-sideration as recipients of your Golden Fleece Award. The Nuclear Reg-ulatorj Co:missien has substantially contributed t o our countrf's infla-tien difficulties through enactnant of politically orientated and tots 11y unrealistic regulations governing nuclear power plant security and fire prctection requirenents.
To comply with these regulatiens, utility companies throughout the country have been forced to spend literally nillions of dollars per nuclear generating plant site for security and fire protection systen nodifications of questionable need or benefit. The burden of these expenditures ultir.ately falls on the general public cs increased rates for elec+ricity and higher production costs!
I agree there is a definate need to naintain fire protection and basic securit r policies throughout the nuclear rower industry. However, these policie: must be realistic and cost effective.
Sincerely, f if A
