June 7, 1979 Fort St. Vrain Unit No. 1 P-79125 Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulations U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Cocmission Washington, DC 20555 Attn:

Mr. Edson C. Case, Acting Director

Dear Mr. Case:

This letter is to update you on the installation status of Fort St. Vrain security system hardware, and to notify you as required by 10CFR50.54(p),

that we will be extending our compensatory measures referenced by previous correspondence on February 23 and thrch 13, 1979, (P-79084 and P-79060).

Continual hardware problems with Vikonics equipment have led to the deter-mination that the system will have to be returned to New York for complete rebuilding. We anticipate this process will be completed in approximately 8 weeks from the date of initial removal. Negotiations with Vikonics to complete this work are being conducted. No date for commencement has yet been selected.

This letter serves as notice that until the system can be made fully operable, we will continue to employ the compensatory measures referenced in previous correspondence as assurance that system effectiveness will not be decreased below the requirements of 10CFR73.

If you have any additional questions, please contact Mr. Hillyard of our office at (303) 571-7436. We will keep your office advised of the status of installation as major changes occur.

Very truly yours, b~ ]%cv Don W. Warembourg Manager Nuclear Production Fort St. Vrain Nuclear Generating Station DWW:il 2353 151 j4ad gook 7906180 53
