MAR 191979 APPLICANT: Babcock & Wilcox Company (B&W)

SUBJECT:

SUMMARY

OF MEETING ON BAW-10085 (RPS-II)

A meeting was held in Bethesda, Maryland on January 30, 1979 with represent-atives of Babcock and Wilcox. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss a verification and validation program for B&W's RPS-II system. This system is described in topical report BAW-10085, " Reactor Protection System".

A list of attendees is provided in Enclosure 1.

The meeting began with a demonstration of B&W's Parallel-Hybrid Module (PHM) for Dr. Hanauer and other members of the staff.

B&W is developing the RPS-II and PHM concurrently. They are presently deciding if they will offer the PHM to their clients. We told B&W that we are hesitant to proceed with our review of RPS-II until we know if RPS-II will be replaced by PHM, B&W said that they would keep us informed of the status of PHM.

B&W began their presentation with a summary of the milestones and their sub-mittals on RPS-II. T!.ey also presented an overview of RPS-II. We told B&W that in addition to the information that they have already provided for our review of BAW-10085, we require a verification and validation program. 8&W responded with a discussion of their plans for an independent verification (this is equivalent to a validation in our terminology) test of the RPS-II software. They have completed the procedures, test equipment, and acceptance criteria for the verification test, which they plan to start on February 2, 1979 and complete in early April. B&W stated that they would send us a report of their verification test in mid-April,1979.

We informed B&W that the tests they are performing for RPS-II are generally in line with our V&V guidelines developed for RESAR 414 and we will review their test report at a later time. However, we reemphasized that we are hesitant to commit our resources to reviewing BAW-10085 without knowing the status of RPS-II vis-a-vis PHM.
