Reger J. Mattsen, Director Division of Systems Integratinn SUDJECT:

BOARD N011FICATION FOLLOWUP In a memorandum dated September 26, 1983, I requested you notify all hearing boards associated with Westinghouse designed PWRs of a revision made to the ECCS actuatica logic in the Borssele Nuclear Power Plant.

In this memorandum I explained that we intended to contact the Westinghouse Owner's Group and request they voluntarily evaluate the relative benefits / detriments of the revision, as it applies to V. S.

Westinghouse designed PWRs, and that we would keep the boards informed of the resolution plan for this issue.

Our intter to the Westinghouse Owners Group Chairman, J. J. Shepard of Carolina Power and Light Company, requesting the Owners to perform the evaluttion of the Borssele revision, was issued on November 15, 1983.

On January 6, 1984, my staff discussed the status of the Westinghouse Owners Group efforts on this request with Mr. Shepard.

Mr. Shepard informed us that they did not receive the letter until December 1, 1983.

Westinghouse was ask9d to evaluate our letter and the Borssele revision and report back to the Owners Group.

They are presently scheduled to report to the owners at their next meeting during the last full week in January. He said he expected Westinghouse to report on the results of their review and to propose a scope and schedule for formulating the final response.

Mr. Shepard stated we could expect a response to our November 15, 1983 letter by the end of January or early February.

This response would identify the schedule for providing the results of their evaluation.

Based on further discussion with Westinghouse, we understand they are planning to complete their evaluation for submittal by mid-March, 1984.

I am providing you with this status update in the event you receive inquires from the hearing boards or other parties, of if you feel it appropriate to notify the boards of the status.
