Fox Islands Electric Cooperative, Inc.

VINALHAVEN, MAINE 04863 TEL. 207 963 4636 March 19, 1979 The Honorable Joseph Hendrie Chairman, Nuclear Regula tory Commission Washington, D.C.

20013

Dear Mr. Hendrie:

Re:

Maine Yankee Nuclear Power Plant Wiscasset, Maine The Fox Islands Electric Co ope ra t i ve, Inc., purchases whole-sale power from Central Maine Power Company and then distributes that power to a yearly average of 1285 accounts on the Islands of North Haven and Vinalhaven, Maine.

We are located about ten miles east of mid-coast Maine and receive power via four single-phase underwa ter cable s.

The Board of Directors is dismayed by the potential economic effect upon our consumers caused by the shut-down of the Maine Yankee Nuclear Power Plant.

In a prior action, the Board has supported President Carter's anti-inflation guidelines so that actions contrary to holding the line on costs are disturbing.

The Board of Directors does not have a nuclear specialist among its members but based upon informa tion a va ilable, the shut-down action appears unreasonable.

The Board of Directors of this Cooperative respectfully suggests that you cancel the order to close the Maine Yankee Nuclear Power Plant at Wiecasset, Maine.

Very truly yours, Fox Islands Electric erative, Inc.

R.

Peters Burr Vice President Copy to:
