l'lL PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION July 3, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF SAFEGUARDS EVENT--
PNS-79-69 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE national security or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff as of this date.
Facility: Commonwealth Edison Company Quad-Cities Units 1, 2 (DN 50-254; 50-265) Cordova, Illinois Subiect:
ACCIDENTAL DISCHAP.GE OF A WEAPON At 8:10 p.m. on July 2, 1979, while three guards were cleaning weapons in the gate house at the entrance to the protected area, a guard sergeant accidentally discharged a.38 caliber revolver.
The bullet struck a bullet-resisting door but did not penetrate.
No one was injured.
The guard involved has been suspended pending completion of the licensee investi-gation.
The State of Illinois has been informed of this incident. No press release is planned by RIII or the licensee.
The IAT has been notified.
