Q WASHINGTON, D. C. 20555 54 4j MAY 3 01979 MEMORANDUM FOR: Ralph J. Jones, Acting Chief Transportation & Product Standards Branch, OSD FROM:

Anthony N. Tse Transportation & Product Standards Branch, OSD

SUBJECT:

RADIATION LEVELS IN PASSENGER - CARRYING AIRCRAFT The enclosed letter from Mr. Entine, dated May 18, 1979, reported radiation levels of 5 to 10 mR/hr on board a Swiss Air flight from Boston to Zurich on the night of April 20 (Friday).

As I reported to you right after I received the 1 tter on May 24, it is important to assure that such radiation levels on board passenger-carr;,ing aircraft are not continuing.

After discussing the matter with DOT (Rick Rawl) and IE (Ed Flack), a quick inspection at Boston Logan Airport has been arra ged for the night of May 25 (Friday). Friday night is selected because we s :pect the reported radiation levels might be resulting from transportation of molybdenum generators to hospitals. This transportation is routinely originated from New England Nuclear Corporation on Friday nights. A regional FAA inspector will inspect Swiss Air and other carriers with molybdenum generator shipments to determine whether radioactive material packages are loaded properly. Where possible, he will also make measurements of radiation levels in the passenger compartments.

I&E has contacted Jerry Parker of the Massachusetts State radiation control agency who will accompany the FAA inspector and assist him with radiation measurements.

I will inform you of further developments on this matter.
