W. 9. COFFIN & ASSOCIATES CONSULTANTS IN FINANCE & FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT Telephone 207-724-3507 P. O. Box 262 Manchester, Maine 04351 March 13, 1979 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C 20000 Gentlemen, This evening the announcement has been given that you have seen fit to order the closing for an indefinite period of the Yankee Atcmic Plant at Wiscasset, Maine becaus2 the design did not meet the requirements for safety in the event of an earthquake.
The Yankee Atomic Plant has operated successfully for a number of years, and you say you have just found out that the design does not meet the requi rements.
Obviously, the f ault is yours.
if that is not the case, then the problem must result from a change in th-rules.
My electric bill for the month of February arrived today.
For 912 kilowatt hours it amounts to $38.89 of which $12.86 or 33.07% is for cost of fuel generation.
i am not inte res ted in a change to oil fi red generation to replace the operation of the Yankee Atomic Plant.
Now that your order has been given, tell me the dates of the last recorded earthquakes in this region and their severity on the Richter scale. We do not have severe earthquakes in this region.neither do we have earthquakes of any significence.
I protest your order, pc: Senator Edmund S. Muskie Ve ry t rul y you s,
William Cohen
