P SUN SAh3S+ LOAN ASSOCIATION March 28, 1979 Dr. Joseph M. Hendrie, Chairman U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555 Maine Yankee Atomic Electric Generating Station Re:
Dear Dr. Hendrie:
As we I wish to express my concern about the closing of the Maine Yankee plant.
all know, there is no perfect solution for anything that we do.
But I have great problems with balancing the closing as against the need for power generated with energy other than oil, and the remote chance that an earthquake would sufficiently damage that facility to the harm of life.
My greater concern is that those few voices of disaster appear to have a higher profile than many of our citizens who are reasonably comfortable with nuclear energy.
In discussing this matter with those who appear to have a knowledge concerning the safety of such units, I personally am satisfied that our engineering skills have.
reasonably coped with the dangers.
Nothing will be 100% safe, even coal mines.
Our energy concerns are becoming more critical, and I find myself hard-pressed to agree with the recent move of t
-NRC.
I hope at some point common sense will perva what I belipve to be d isions made in too much of an emotional environment.
