Subject:
Potential 50.55(e) Report Regarding Welds on G&W Pipe Assemblies
Dear Mr. Seidle:
On March 29, we reported to Inspector A.B. Rosenberg, who was present at the Wolf Creek Site, and to Mr. C.R. Oberg, via telephone, that welds in a piping pre-assembly furnished by Gulf and Western Energy Products of Paola, Kansas, appeared to be unacceptable based on visual inspection of the welds and review of the radiographs.
Since this initial verbal report, we have called in a Level III Inspec-tor from our Lead A/E (Bechtel) to examine the welds and review the radiographs of the assembly in question. After performing the above, the Bechtel Inspector did not concur with the assessment made by site personnel.
Pending resolution of this difference in interpretation, we have placed a Hold on the installation (welding in place) of ASME Class II assemblics fabricated by G&W.
No determination of the safety implications or cor-rective actions can be made until further investigations are completed and final determination of weld acceptability is made.
We will report further on this matter within 60 days.
Sincerely, g!4Y GLK:bb 2263 300 7906210 30D 201 N. Market - Wichita, Kansas - Ma'l Address: P. O. Box 208 / WicNta, Kansas 67201 - Telephone: Area Code (316) 264-1111
