Page 1 of 1 North Anna Power Station, Unit #1 Docket No. 50-338 Report No. 79-068/03L-0 Description of Event On May 8, 1979, sample pumps 1-RM-P-159A and 159B failed creating a loss of power to both RM-RMS-159 and RM-RMS-160. This was caused by a shorted solenoid valve coil in the pump control circuitry.

Probable Consequences of Occurrence Since repairs to the pump control circuit were completed within the 6 hour6.944444e-5 days <br />0.00167 hours <br />9.920635e-6 weeks <br />2.283e-6 months <br /> period allowed by T.S. 3.4.6.1 and the containment sump pump discharge flow measurement system was still operable, the health and safety of the general public was not affected. A similar problem exists on Unit 2 and the same corrective actions will be taken.

Causes of Occurrence Solenoid valve coil shorted out, causing loss of power to both RM-RMS '

159 and RM-RMS-160.

Immediate Corrective Action A maintenance report was submitted to the electric shop to determine why RM-RMS-159 and RM-RMS-160 were inoperable. The work performed under the maintenance report was to replace the defective solenoid. Once the work was completed, both channels were returned to service. Scheduled Corrective Action A design change to separate the control circuits of the sample pumps for RM-RMS-159 and RM-RMS-160 has been initiated.

Actions Taken To Prevent Recurrence No further action has been taken.
