[b'jW General O'hces: 212 West M chigen Avenue, Jackson. Michigan 49201 e Area Code S17 788-OSSO May 30, 1979 Director, Nuclear Reactor Regulation Att Mr Dennis L Ziemann, Chief Operating Reactors Branch No 2 US Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555 DOCKET 50-155 - LICENSE DPR BIG ROCK POINT PLANT - FIRE PROTECTION MODIFICATIONS Table 3.2 of the Safety Evaluation Report (SER) accompanying Amendment ?5 to License DPR-6 (forwarded by NRC letter dated April 4, 1979) requires Contumers Power Company to submit certain information on fire protection modificatiets by specified dates.

Item 3.2.3 requires additional information concerning ?.he need for fire protection insulation on cabling in the recirculating pump ares at Big Rock Point by May 30, 1979. Amendment 25 states, in part, "In the event these dates for submittal cannot be met, the licensee shall submit a report, explaining the circumstances, together with a revised schedule." This letter is to report a delay in submittal of the information required by Table 3.2, Item 3.2.3.

A detailed evaluation of the need for protective insulation on recirculating pump area cabling and associated valve operators is in progress, but is not yet complete. This evaluation expands upon the initial analysis reported by Consumers Power Company letter dated January 17, 1979 which concluded that insulation was not required.

In addition, plant personnel and our subcontractor are continuing to evaluate alternatives of providing such insulation, should it be concluded that it is necessary, which would be consistent with plant requirements for accessibility and maintainability of the valve operators. These evaluations will require approximately two weeks to complete.

Consumers Power Company will provide the additional information required by Table 3.2, Item 3.2.3 of the Amendment 25 SER by June 15, 1979.
