Dear Mr. Coetzt

~ We have reviewed the material submitted for the above mentioned permit. Our '

records indicate a high density of archeological sites within the general area '

of the Mississippi River eseasings, and several sites in or adjacent to all

~

three corridors on the Wisconsia side of the river; one of these sites (the l _

' Diamond Bluff /Mero sitet 47-Pi-2) is listed on tha Yational Register of Histerie l .,

Plaeas and is loested in section 19. T25U, R18W. The offact of the route- - ~

i  ! chosen on this er other archeological sites eligible for inclusion on the

! National Register cannot be determined until a thorough archeological recom-l naissanes and evalostien is undertaken.

w ~

our records also indicata a high density of s,rcheelegieal'aitas in the vicinity

= - of the Chippewa River crossings in Pepin and Duan oevaties. 'These areas must ~

\ also be examined by a qualified archeologist before we can comment on the ' '

f/

' effects of tramanission line construction.,

f', ,

Archeological reconnaissance should, not be limited to the river crossings. ,

however. Previous work in interior drainages.such as the Eau Calle and Plum River valleys has located usay.important' archeological sites far removed from the safer rivers. We have pointed oot to other federal agencies involved in

~ this project that a survey of the' entire transmission line would be necessary i 4 ia^ order to comply with Section 106 of the National Eistoric Preservation Act '

,of 1964, Emmentive Order 11593, and 36 CFR 800.
