License No. SNM-1265 December 11, 1978 Office of Nuclear Material Safety & Safeguards Attn:

L.C. Rouse, Acting Chief Fuel Reprocessing & Recycle Branch U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 7915 Eastern Ave.

SUBJECT:

STRUCTUPAL CONSIDERATIONS REGARDING BASIN 2 SOUTH WALL AND GATE, MORRIS OPERATION Gentlemen:

This letter is in response to the questions contained in your letter of December 1,1978.

In addition to the loading acting directly on the south wall, the effect of loading applied to the gate is also considered.

While the loading acting on the wall is applied as distributed pressure, loads acting on the gate are transferred to the south wall as a concentrated nodal load based on nodal tributary areas.

These nodal loads are applied along the region where the wall and the gate are in contact.

There is no intention that any of the basins would be drained individually at any time, and no provisions for individual basin drainage have been incorporated in existing plans.

Please call H.A. Rogers if there are further questions regarding these matters.

Respectfully submitted,

Lgfy, M^-- --
