Screen Shot 2019-09-24 at 8.54.26 AM.png The seabrook plant owner, NextEra has admitted that the concretesurrounding the reactor is compromised due to an alkali silica reaction(ASR) that is slowly degrading the structural integrity ofthecontainment vessel. The license for the plant to operate has alreadybeen extended by the NRC from 2030 to 2050.
Thishearing has been requested and granted so that the judges of theNRC'sAtomic Safety and Licensing Board should decide if the decision needs tobe reversed. I truly believe thattransparency in mitigation efforts need to be inplace to address thisisolated issue that is facing only this nuclear reactor out of the 98reactors in the US. With no experience on how to handle this issue, wemust ask that the NRC require theowners to collaborate with expertsaround the world to demonstrate their due diligence prior to a licenseextension.
