Wisconsin Electnc amcoumr 231 W. MICHIGAN, P.o. BOX 2046, MILWA'.'KEE, WI 53201 January 3,1980 Mr. James G. Keppler, Director Office of Inspection and Enforcement Region III U. S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, Illinois 60137
Dear Mr. Keppler:
DOCKET NOS. 50-266 AND 50-301 IE BULLETIN NO. 79-19 P0 INT BEACH NUCLEAR PLANT UNIT 1 AND 2 By letter dated September 24, 1979, we responded to IE Bulletin No. 79-19 concerning packaging of low-level radioactive waste for transportation and burial.
In that letter we committed at item 5 to integrate additional training on regulatory requirements which affect low-level radioactive waste shipments into the health physics lecture series by January 1,1980. We also committed at item 8 to complete an audit of the low-level radioactive waste transfer, packaging and transport activities at the Point Beach Nuclear Plant following the Unit 1 refueling outage.
This letter is to advise you that our schedule for completion of these conmitments has changed.
Due to the extended Unit I refueling shutdown and to the Unit 1 steam generator tube leak repair outage, we have moved the implementation date for the additional health physics training to January 31, 1980.
For the same reasons and because of the extraordinary involvement of our personnel in responding to NRC short term lessons learned requirements and bulletin requests, we have delayed the management controlled audit of the waste disposal activities until after the first of the year but prior to January 31, 1980.
We also wish to correct a clerical error in our September 20, 1979 letter. We stated that additional audits of the packaging and shipping activi-ties would be scheduled on a biannual basis. The word " biannual" should be
" biennial". As stated originally, if found to be necessary, these audits will be scheduled more frequently.
Very truly yours,
&y 1817 183 C. W. Fay, Director NuclearPowerDepartd8h81 1880
