Dear Ms. Manaffey:

This is in reply to your letter of April 4,1979, to Dr. Brezezinski at the White House.

I am sorry for the delay but we have been very busy with the aftermath of the Three Mile Island accident.

You asked how aften are nuclear plants checked.

In May 1977, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission adopted a program that, when fully im-plemented in September 1981, will assign at least one resident inspector to each site with an operating nuclear power reactor.

It is presently planned to have at least as many resident inspectors at each site as there are operating power reactors there. The first resident inspectors were assigned to fifteen sites during the Sunner of 1978. There are now resident inspectors assigned to twenty-eight sites in addition to Three Mile Island. There are also resident inspectors at nine sites where nuclear power reactors are under construction, and more of those sites are to be included in the future.

We agree with you that the Government should keep a close eye on nuclear plants.

Sincerely, 451 Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation 2220 094 7 911120 S N H
