Subject:

Fort St. Vrain Inservice Inspection Program - PCRV Liner Cooling Tube Corrosion Data

Reference:

PSC letter P-79058, J.K. Fuller to W.P. Gammill Dated March 15, 1979 Gentlemen:

Paragraph C on page 8 of the above referenced letter indicates that additional information on the subject of Fort St. Vrain PCRV liner cooling tube corrosion monitoring would be provided to the NRC by PSC. In subse-quent discussions with the NRC on May 2,1979, PSC indicated that this information would be fomarded to NRC upon receipt of the information from GAC.

Attached is the tube corrosio1 data resulting from a low-level DOE funded program. The corrosion rate as measured by a corrosometer is 0.3 mils / year or 1/3 of the maximum allowable rate of 0.9 mils / year.

Very truly yours ,

PCRV LINER COOLING TUBE CORROSION In September 1976, a corrosometer was purchased and installed to monitor the corrosion rate of the PCRV liner cooling tubes. The corro-someter measures the increase in resistance of a fine (40 mil) wire held in the coolant stream. The wire is of the same carbon steel mater-ial as the PCRV liner cooling tubes and is located inmediately upstream of heat exchanger F4603. The mathematical expression, corrosion rate (mils /yr) = a reading x probe multiplier (a) x 365 a time 1000 (a) in this case = 10 relates the chance in resistance of the wire to the corrosion rate of the tubes.

Data has been continuously recorded on strip charts, and no pertur-bations reflecting oxygen ingress or other unusual occurrences have been observed since this surveillance began in FY'77. Steadily increasing resistance readings correlate to a corrosion rate of 0.3 mils / year or 1/3 of the maximum allowable rate of 0.9 mils / year.

Fundin~g for the steam generator perfonnance and corrosion surveil-lance task was discontinued for FY'79.
