Dear Sir,

On December 22, 1978 in response to the University of Delaware's application, dated September 29, 1978, for renewal of NRC License #SNM-656, the NRC License Management Branch cancelled NRC License #SNM-656 and added the Pu-Be sources to NRC License 07-01579-19 by amendment.

Therefore, Infraction A, concerning License SNM-656, stated in your letter of December 14, 1978, will be corrected in accordance with statements made concerning calibration of instruments in our SeNember 29, 1978 application for renewal of license SNM-656 and incor m ated as license conditions under 07-01579-19 by amendment.

Under th.ese conditions the Radiation Safety Office is responsible along with the supervisors or the Pu-Be sources for calibration of the three radiation protection instruments indicated on SNM-656.

As of this date both instruments capable of detecting Alpha and Beta radiation have been calibrated against NES Certified Standards.

Our set up for calibration against a recently purchase Gamma radiation certified standard is in the process of construction. We expect to have this available by January 15, 1979 and should comple.te calibration of all instrument capable of detecting Gamma and neutrons by January 30, 1379.

All radiation protection instruments will be eclibrated at six month intervals as a standard operating procedure of the Radiation Safety Office. A log book for calibration of instruments will be set up and documentation of the calibration along with the make and model number of the survey meter and probe will be recorded on a form and placed in the log book which will be kept in the Radiation Safety Office.

The instruments and probes are calibrated in 2 scales with instruments adjusted to read,- 10% of source value at distanccs of calibration.

Full compliance witti license conditions of 07-01579-19, as amended will be achieved by January 30, 1979.
