Subject:
Puget Sound Power & Light Company Skagit Nuclear Power Project, Unit 1 & 2 Docket Nos. 50-522 and 50-523 Letter Report entitled " Subsurface Investigation of Disturbed Glacial Deposits on Lake Cavanaugh Road"
Dear Mr. Stolz:
Submitted herewith please find 6 copies of the above referenced letter report. Although no formal question was directed to the Applicant by the NRC regarding the glacial deposits on Lake Cava-naugh Road, a series of newspaper articles and television news re-ports based upon press releases at about the same time the NRC was informed by the USGS, implied that active faulting could be con-sidered the most likely cause of the deformation in the glacial de-posits. Additionally, an NRC field trip report, dated Novecher 23, 1978, recommended that Puget Power should conduct additional inves-tigations of the feature.
In light of the above, Puget's consultant, Bechtel, investigated the feature in question along Lake Cavanaugh Road and the referenced report represents the results of that inves-tigation.
A closely spaced auger boring program was utilized to define the till layer approximately 40 feet below the local road surface.
No evidence, from the auger holes, could be found that the till layer was offset; the surface of the till is, in fact, remarkably uniform over the interval examined.
