".M U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission L. C. Rouse, Chief Fuel Cycle and Material Safety Branch N N.)C DOCUMEAT k. -

7915 Eastern Avenue Silver Spring, MD 20910 Gentlemen:

Your approval for the immediate use of the newly installed 500,000 gallon covered tank for storage of liquid waste is urgently requested.

This tank is, described in Section 900, Part 925.11 of our current submittal as an extension of our holdinc.- pond capacity.

The recent rainfall has raised the level of these ponds to within a few inches of spillover.

Rather than make the transfer on an emergency basis prior to full approval, we request this separate approval for the use of this tank for storage only.

As described in the submittal-this tank is located between the inner and outer fences north of the present holding ponds.

The tank is twelve feet high, 100 feet in diameter (four feet of the tank is below ground level).

The interior is lined with a 30 mil thick layer of Hypalon.

A second underground plastic liner continuing over external dikes provides secondary contain-ment.

The tank is covered to exclude rainfall.

Monitor wells TS and T6 which have been sampled monthly for the past several months prior to construction provide monitoring of the under-ground aquifer.

The treated liquid waste is controlled to 20 parts per million of uranium under existing procedures.

In our opinion, use of this tank as an extension of our holding pond capacity will have no adverse environmental effect.

It will prevent a spillover from our present lagoons.

our prompt attention to our request is urgently needed.

Very truly yours, UNIGED NUCLEAR CORPORATION
