Virginia Electric and Powe r Company North Anna Power Station, Unit #1 Attachment: Page 1 of 1 Doc ke t No. 50-338 Report No. LER 80-014/03L-0

Description of Event

On January 13, 1980, with the unit in hot standby, the steam driven auxiliary feedwater pump 1-FW-P-2 was removed from service due to a reported oil leak for inspection of the pump's outboard bearing.

When the bearing was removed, the inboard side of the thrust bearing was found to be wiped.

Probable Consequences of Occurrence The consequences at this event were limited because both motor driven auxiliary feedwater pumps (1-FW-P-3A and 3B) remained available for operation if required.

The ef fects of this occurrence were also minimized by the fact that the inoperable auxiliary feedwater pump was restored to operable status within the 72 hour8.333333e-4 days
0.02 hours
1.190476e-4 weeks
2.7396e-5 months
time limit allowed by the Action Statement of T.S.

3. 7.1. 2.

As a re sul t, the health and safety of the general public were not af fected by this event.

There are no generic implications associa-ted with this particular occurrence.

Cause of Event

It is believed that the wiped thrust bearing resulted from a lack of oil in the bearing.

Because the auxiliary feedwater pump had not operated since the start of the refueling outare, the oil had an opportunity to drain out of the bearing during this extended period.

Immediate Corrective Action

The wiped thrust bearing was replaced and the auxiliary feedwater pump was returned to service.

Scheduled Corrective Action No scheduled corrective action is required.

Actions Taken to Prevent Recurrence No further actions are required.
