F Gentlemen:

b This is in regard to the resubmittal of your request for approval of routes to be used for shipment of spent fuel from the Chalk River Nuclear. Laboratories, Chalk River, Ontario, Canada via 09densburg, New York to the Department of Energy's Savannah River Plant, Aiken, South Carolina as contained in your letter (NT #2178) of September 27, 1979.

The resubmitted route (enclosure to your September 27, 1979 letter) is judged l'

to meet the regulatory requirements in accordance with 10 CFR Part 73.37 and accordingly is approved except as noted below and in the notes on page 8 of the enclosure. A bridge with posted weight limitations was encountered at one point and the omission of a connecting link between two roads at another.

[.

The route was changed to bypass the bridge and to include the connecting link.

[

The route overview (strip map), enclosure to this letter, was prepared to j-reflect these changes.

i This approval in no way attests to the traffic and highway safety of the route nor implies an NRC endorsement thereof from a traffic and highway safety standpoint.

Also the approval does not guarantee that there will be no local i

i or state legislation applicable to the route that restricts or probibits the novement of radioactive materials.

i I

During the winter months when inclement weather with actor.panying hazardous road conditions can occur with short notice, the appropriate state police along the route should be contacted with regard to road conditions before a l

shipment commences.

The initial arrangements with local law enforcement agencies along the route, as required by 10 CFR Part 73.37(a)(2), have been completed by the NRC staff.

Data relating to these arrangements and a copy of the approved route are p

enclosed. This infomation is to be incorporated into your shipment plan

'y and provided to your carrier along with instructions regarding its use.
