Dear Mr. Grier:

In accordance with the requirements of Connecticut Yankee Technical Specifications, Section 6.9.2.a.9, the following preliminary report concerning diesel generator loading is hereby submitted.

j In the process of reviewing the emergency diesel generator loads following T:!I it was determined that for a certain situation, e.g.,

I the loss of AC followed by manually loading the diesel generator and subsequently followed by a LOCA that the diesels might go out on ove rload. Our existing procedures allowed a charging pump to be loaded on the diesel and up to an additional 500 kw loaded on each diesel.

The recently completed preliminary calculations show this to be not acceptable as the diesel may become overloaded if a LOCA occurred while operating in this condition.

We have made administrative c.ianges to alleviate this problem. We have changed appropriate procedur.

to state that a charging pump is not to be f

started and no more than 500 kw of load may be added to the diesel. We will obtain chacging flow via the metering charg ~ng pump which will be l

included in the 500 kw load allowed on each diesel.

i A follow-up report will be submitted within fourteen (14) days.

Very truly yours,
