Dear Mr. Funderburg:
This is to confirm the comments made to you regarding the recent regulatory program review held by E. C. Ashley.
Based on the results of the review, the staff believes that the State's program for control of agreement materials is adequate to protect the public health and safety and compatible with the Commission's program.
We were pleased to note improvement in the quality of inspections, however, more thorough coverage of the requirements of 10 CFR Part 19 is still needed during inspections.
The number of priority I licenses overdue for inspection increased from 4 to 7 during the past year. The total inspection backlog increased from 16 to 19 during the same period.
Every effort should be made to reduce this backlog of inspections.
Coments to applicants regarding deficiencies in applications need to be better documented and recorded in the file of the licensee.
We would appreciate your review of the above recommendations and would like to receive your comments on them.
I appreciate the courtesy and cooperation extended to Mr. Ashley during his meeting with you and your staff.
Sincerely,
.N k G. Wayne err, Assistant Director for State Agreements rogram Office of State Programs cc:
